More and more people are asking this question: “What is Christian counseling, and how is it different from other types of therapy?” If you’ve ever found yourself wondering if it’s possible to care for your mental health without separating your faith, you’re not alone.
Maybe you’ve been carrying grief, anxiety, or old wounds that still feel fresh. Maybe you’ve tried to pray it away or quote Scripture over it but still feel stuck. Christian counseling offers a way to hold both faith and emotional healing together without having to choose one over the other.
In this post, I’ll walk you through what Christian counseling is, how it works, who it’s for, and how it can help you heal in a way that honors both your story and your relationship with God.
Christian counseling is a form of therapy that integrates your faith in Jesus with evidence-based mental health practices. It’s a space where your emotions, thoughts, and spiritual life are all welcome. Unlike secular therapy, which often separates faith from the process, Christian counseling sees you as a whole person with a body, mind, and soul.
In sessions at my Arizona therapy practice, we might explore your anxiety or emotional pain using tools and approaches like EMDR, which helps process stuck or overwhelming memories, or IFS, a gentle approach that helps you understand different parts of yourself, all with the goal of helping you heal with honesty and compassion, while also making space to pray or reflect on Scripture if that is something you are interested in or would find helpful.
You don’t need to be in a perfect place spiritually to start. In fact, Christian counseling often becomes a safe space to wrestle with questions you haven’t felt safe to ask anywhere else.

This is such an important distinction. Christian counseling is not the same as biblical counseling. While biblical counseling often relies solely on Scripture and may at times seem dismissive of trauma or emotional pain, Christian counseling is provided by licensed therapists who are both clinically trained and grounded in their faith.
Both approaches value the Bible, but Christian counseling also considers your nervous system, your trauma history, and your relational patterns. We don’t just offer verses and encouragement. We sit with the hard stuff. During each session, we pay attention to what your body remembers. We hold space for grief, doubt, and the parts of your story that haven’t had language yet.
If you’ve been hurt by previous experiences with counseling that felt overly rigid or dismissive of mental health, please know this: Christian counseling offers something different. It is both clinical and compassionate.
Christian counseling is for anyone who wants to pursue emotional healing while staying rooted in their faith. You don’t need to have all the right words. You don’t even need to feel close to God right now. All you need to do is come as you are.
Many of my clients are Christian women who feel like they’re doing everything right but still carry a deep sense of exhaustion or disconnection. Some are walking through quiet grief or emotional pain they don’t have words for. Others feel distant from God or unsure of how to keep going when their faith feels heavy. They’re not looking for perfection. They just want space to be honest, to rest, and to find themselves again.
If that’s you, you’re not alone. You are welcome here.
Here are some ways Christian counseling can support your healing:

Every Christian counseling session is different because every person is different. But in general, sessions are client-led, meaning we go at your pace. We might spend time exploring a painful memory, talking through something you’re facing right now, or helping you identify how certain beliefs are shaping the way you see yourself or God.
Prayer is always optional. Some clients want it at the start or end. Others want to wait, and some prefer not to include prayer at all. Every option is okay. Scripture might come up naturally in conversation, especially if it offers comfort or truth. But as both a Christian and therapist, I also believe the Holy Spirit can work in the quiet, too.
If you’ve been feeling stuck emotionally or spiritually, it may be time to try something new. Here are a few signs Christian counseling might be a good fit:

Faith-based therapy isn’t about fixing you. It is about walking with you as you heal. It is about creating space for God to meet you in your story. Not just the polished parts but the real, raw, and often painful ones.
If something in your heart is stirring, and you’re wondering if this might help, I’d be honored to walk with you. Let’s build a bridge from where you’ve been to where you’re called to go.
If you’re curious about Gilbert Christian counseling and want to explore whether it’s right for you, I’d love to talk. You can schedule a free 15-minute consultation to ask questions and see if we’d be a good fit.
As a Christian therapist, I offer both in-person and online sessions at my Arizona therapy practice. I specialize in helping Christian women who are doing all the right things but still feel like it’s not enough, or like something is missing, even in their faith. My approach is rooted in compassion and truth, offering space for both healing and honesty.
In-person and online Christian counseling in Gilbert gives you the chance to bring your whole self—your struggles, your faith, and your questions—into a safe and supportive space. By approaching mental health through a Biblical lens, you can begin to release the weight of what you’ve been carrying, rediscover hope, and grow stronger in both your faith and daily life.
I also provide other Christian counseling services, including trauma-informed therapy to help people process unresolved wounds, major life changes, and pain that feels too heavy to hold alone. Whether you are grieving a loss, facing challenges in relationships, or carrying hidden burdens, this is a space where your story is valued and you don’t have to walk the journey by yourself.
At Building Bridges Collective, faith and mental health work hand in hand. Our practice offers a compassionate place where your healing is taken seriously. Your faith is respected, and your growth unfolds at a pace that feels right for you.
